Artist's Statement

My work reflects both philosophical and aesthetic considerations that are important to me.  First and foremost I consider these works to be paintings. Although they are abstract, they emerge from my former representational artwork and address the same aesthetic concerns, especially color, shape, line, and value.  The inclusion of other materials--most notably wood but occasionally paper and fabric--addresses my desire to make art from what others might consider trash.  I find the beauty of found pieces of wood, especially those containing the remnants of carpenter's notations or rusting nails or flaking paint, to be the perfect vehicle for making the old and discarded feel fresh and contemporary.
